Gather ingredients and read your bread machine's manual for the exact order it prefers. In most machines, liquids go in first, then dry ingredients, and finally yeast on top of the dry layer.
Pour warm water into the bread pan, then whisk in the melted butter or oil and the sugar. The liquid should feel comfortably warm to the touch, not hot.
Sprinkle the salt over the liquid to keep it evenly distributed.
Add the flour on top, sweeping it to cover the liquid. This helps keep the yeast separate until the machine starts mixing.
Make a small well in the center of the flour and sprinkle the instant yeast into it. Do not let the yeast mix with the liquid yet.
Place the pan in the machine, choose the Basic/White cycle, select a 1.5 lb loaf, and set to medium crust. Start the cycle and let the machine do the kneading, rising, and baking.
As the cycle runs, you’ll hear a steady hum and the dough ball forming inside. When the cycle finishes, the machine will beep or switch to “keep warm.”
Carefully remove the pan and transfer the loaf to a rack. Allow it to rest 15–20 minutes before slicing. The crust will firm up a touch as it cools, and the interior should look light and airy.
