  • Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly butter a 9-inch square baking dish or an equivalent 2- to 2.5-quart ovenproof dish.
  • In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Let them rest while you prepare the topping to mingle their flavors and release a few juices.
  • Make the crumble topping: In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and oats. Add the cold, cubed butter and work it in with your fingertips or a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized bits of butter still intact.
  • Spread the apple mixture in an even layer in the prepared dish. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples, gently pressing it a touch so it sticks to the fruit and bakes up into beautiful clumps.
